Women’s History Month

Package Design | Branding, Copywriting, Designing For Social Good  | Spring 2022

A common interest of mine has been researching and addressing societal gender inequalities, mostly those found in the workplace including unequal pay, the wage gap, and gender biases. I created a design solution to workplace gender bias and misconduct through a one-month event during Women’s History Month to create awareness of the gender biases women face not only in the workplace but at home and in public as well hosted by HR, Corporate Communications, or the Chief Diversity Officer. Employees would receive a box with tools for them to learn about the reality of gender inequality and reflect on if this is something that exists in their office culture or within their lives.

Zine Pages

The zine acts as not only a handbook for employees but also has an interactive aspect for employees to reflect on what they have learned about the topics of gender inequality. This zine is also a good tool for employees to refer to year-round on this topic of gender inequality. Through the zine, there are multiple statistics, facts, and scenarios portrayed about the topic. Definitions and references are given to inform the reader on the topic beyond the surface level. My goal with this zine was to not deter people who may instantly scoff at feminist topics.

What’s in the Box?

Employees will collect this box from their workplace and their employee ID will be taken down so that HR has an understanding of who actually engaged with this event. Did one department tremendously outplay the others? What gender interacted with events more?

The box contains a series of deliverables informing employees of gender inequality:

  • Two cookies with stats on real workplace inequalities regarding higher-level positions. These cookies act as a quick incentive to get employees to pick up their box and literally shoves the information in their face.

  • Audit for employees to write down their favorite celebrities, characters, and musicians as well as nearby streets, buildings, and artists. After completing this list, they are then asked to check off the ones who are or are named after women. It can be assumed, not many of the individuals listed will be women.

  • Calendar showing the hybrid workshops and events that will take place over the month regarding Women’s History Month with topics including a discussion about anonymous tips shared by employees about the topic and addressing the companies climate, followed with discussions on supporting women in the workplace, at home, and in public.

  • Zine acting an interactive guidebook that reflects the topics to be discussed in the workshops. Through the zine, the employee is put in women’s shoes and asked questions about their reaction to real uncomfortable and unsafe situations women face.

  • Passport as an incentive for employees to participate in the event. The employees will be required to complete their audit, zine, and attend at least 1 workshop to be entered into. giveaway for a 3-night stay at a nearby resort. Included are instructions for virtual staff.
